About the Author:
Paul Hashagen has been fighting fires since 1976. In 2003, he retired from the FDNY after 25 years of service, with 20 of those years in Rescue Company 1. He is a former chief of the Freeport Fire Department and is still a member of Truck Company 1. A contributing author at FireRescue magazine, Paul writes the monthly historical column "Distant Fires," as well as feature articles. Paul has written several books and numerous stories on the history of the fire service, including The Bravest 1865-2002, the official history of the FDNY.
